Nepal is the land of different tribal and ethnic groups. Here, 37.2% of the total population is occupied by indigenous nationalities.
Nepal is rich in cultural and linguistic diversity. One hundred and twenty five (125) languages are spoken in Nepal (Ethnolog 2002 ). Nepal has been the habitat of multiethnic, multilinguistic human beings since ancient period. Bhujel is one of the ethnic groups having own language and cultural tradition among the indigenous nationalities living in Nepal. According to their history, it is found that they were involved in hunting, animal rearing and crop farming around Dhorpatan and settled there. There was the kingdom of Bhujel in ‘Bhuji Nisi’ region but they were scattered in different places with the rise of twenty-two and twenty-four states in the mid-fourteenth century. After losing their origin place, they were scattered in different places and divided into several castes and sub-castes along with their circumstances. At present, Bhujels have been scattered in different places and due to lack of broad study about them it is difficult to say in what surname and sub-surname they are divided into; though, primarily, Bhujels are divided into four surnames, i.e.‘Bhujyal’, ‘Gharti’, ‘Nisel’ and ‘Khawas’, and 119 sub-surnames, i.e. ‘Thain’, ‘Anithapa’, ‘Balikpare’, ‘Kanchhingya’, ‘Khasrungya’ etc. Bhujels living around Bhujikot or Bhujikhola and the only ‘Kabila’ group living around Ghartakot or Ghartakhola were sequencely known as ‘Bhujel’ and ‘Gharti’. Though Bhujels are called somewhere ‘Gharti’ and somewhere Bhujel, they are divided into several surname and sub-surname at present due to new environment, ruling structure, policy, law and coexistence with other communities Bhuji valley of Baglung is supposed as the origin place or main place of Bhujel tribe.
